Moderated Mediation Analysis
Moderated mediation analysis tests whether the size of an indirect effect of a predictor on an outcome through a mediator depends on the value of a moderator.
조절된 매개분석은 예측변수가 매개변수를 거쳐 결과변수에 미치는 간접효과의 크기가 조절변수의 값에 따라 달라지는지를 검정하는 방법이다.
How do I test whether a mediation effect differs depending on a third variable?
매개효과가 제3의 변수에 따라 달라지는지 어떻게 검정하나요?
Moderated mediation (conditional process analysis) estimates conditional indirect effects at different moderator values and tests the index of moderated mediation, usually with bootstrap confidence intervals. It fits theories in which a mechanism operates more strongly for some people or contexts than others.
When to use Moderated Mediation Analysis
- An indirect effect is expected to be stronger at high versus low levels of a moderator
- The moderator acts on the predictor-to-mediator path, the mediator-to-outcome path, or both
- Cross-sectional or experimental data with measured predictor, mediator, moderator, and outcome
When to use something else
- Only the indirect effect without a moderator is of interest: use simple mediation analysis
- Mediator and outcome are latent constructs with measurement error: use SEM with latent interactions
Assumptions and requirements
- Correct causal ordering of predictor, mediator, and outcome
- No unmeasured confounding of the mediator-outcome relation
- Linear relationships and correctly specified interaction terms
- Bootstrap resampling for inference on indirect effects
What the analysis reports
- Path coefficients with interaction terms
- Conditional indirect effects at selected moderator values with bootstrap CIs
- Index of moderated mediation with bootstrap CI
- Plot of the indirect effect across moderator values
How to report it
The index of moderated mediation was significant, index = [value], 95% bootstrap CI [[value], [value]], indicating the indirect effect of [X] on [Y] through [M] depended on [W].
