TabNet Architecture
TabNet is a deep learning architecture for tabular data that uses sequential attention to select a sparse subset of features at each decision step, giving built-in feature importance.
TabNet은 각 결정 단계에서 순차적 어텐션으로 일부 특성만을 희소하게 선택하여 특성 중요도를 함께 제공하는 정형(표) 데이터용 딥러닝 구조이다.
Can I use a deep learning model with built-in interpretability on tabular data?
정형 데이터에 해석 가능성을 갖춘 딥러닝 모형을 쓸 수 있나요?
TabNet processes tabular features through a sequence of decision steps, each using a learned attention mask to choose which features to use, so it yields both predictions and feature-importance masks. It fits large tabular classification or regression tasks where a neural approach is desired, though gradient boosted trees often perform as well or better.
When to use TabNet Architecture
- Large tabular datasets for classification or regression
- Wanting feature-selection masks as part of a neural model
- Combining tabular learning with self-supervised pretraining on unlabeled rows
When to use something else
- The dataset is small or medium sized: use gradient boosting such as LightGBM or XGBoost
- Coefficient-level interpretation is required: use linear or logistic regression
Assumptions and requirements
- Large labelled training set
- Categorical features encoded as embeddings or indices
- Hyperparameter tuning of decision steps and sparsity, with early stopping
- Held-out or cross-validated evaluation
What the analysis reports
- Test or cross-validated metrics (AUC, accuracy, RMSE)
- Global feature importance from attention masks
- Per-step attention masks for individual predictions
- Training and validation loss curves
How to report it
TabNet achieved a test AUC of [value], with [feature] receiving the largest aggregate attention weight ([value]).
